Code Talker by Joseph Bruchac

The United States is at war, and sixteen-year-old Ned Begay wants to join the cause — especially when he hears that Navajos are being specifically recruited by the Marine Corps. So he claims he's old enough to enlist, breezes his way through boot camp, and suddenly finds himself involved in a top-secret task, one that's exclusively performed by Navajos. He has become a code talker. Now Ned must brave some of the heaviest fighting of the war, and with his native Navajo language as code, send crucial messages back and forth to aid in the conflict against Japan. His experiences in the Pacific — from Guadalcanal to Iwo Jima and beyond — will leave him forever changed.

I think the book is good so far because it has good detail and tells what it was like back then for the Navajos.

  2. Does Ned reach his dream to be a teacher later in his life? Does his good grades help him get in the war? Will he get hurt in the war? Will he ever see his family again? I think the book is a good book right now because I can put my self in Ned's shoes and get into the book and be able to feel who he feels.

    2. Why is it hard to speak Navajo unless you know the language from birth?
    3. If you went to war what would you bring to war and why? Like when Ned brought corn pollen for blessings.
    4. Why did the Japanese didn't show their faces while fighting in the war?

  5. Tyler,

The bilagaanaas are mean to the Navajos because they believed the Mexicans when they told the bilagaanaas that the Navajos were bad to them.

The Japanese attacked the U.S. because the Japanese didn't want the U.S. to help them anymore.

  8. What happened on December 7 1941 in one of your quotes? Thinking of your first quote I remember too, was it from the time he was at code school and was playing fencing with his rifle with his friends until they got the M-1
