Soldier X by Don Wulffson
As World War II rages, sixteen-year-old Erik Brandt finds himself on a train traveling to Russia. He's one of the hundreds of thousands of German boys being sent to the Eastern Front by Hitler — since no men are left to fight. Trained as an interpreter and not a soldier, Erik manages to survive the combat, but only by slipping into a dead enemy's uniform, and posing as a wounded Russian. Now the young German must keep up his charade....Soldier X is based on a conversation author Don Wulffson had with a German war survivor. The result is a thoughtful and compelling novel that takes readers inside the mind of a boy who must fight and even die for a war he doesn't believe in.

I think the author gave the title he did to the story because this is about a
ReplyDeleteboy who likes to be called x and he is drafted into the military. I also think maybe later in the book he gets the nick name “soldier x.”
I picked the quote “During World War II I was a german soldier.” (prologue) (viii)
I think the the character jakob is important because, he one of the lucky ones who mange to stay alive. I also think jakob is important because in the book erik and jakob become somewhat friends.
This book took place first in a train in germany then it travels deeper into the battle in Russia. It took place during World War II.
This is called a historical text because it is based off events during World War II. 1. In the book Erik's convoy gets bombed by Russia and Russia was a major enemy of germany during the second war.
Quote 1: "My stomach clenched in a not as Dobelmann's gaze came to a rest on me- then on my rifle, a standard issue four-cartridge Mauser."
ReplyDeleteReason: When the author says "a standard issue four-cartridge Mauser" I know that the Mauser was standard issue for the German soldiers during World War II but after that they started to develop better weapons and the Mauser got pushed aside.
Quote 2: "At 200 meters, Russians burst screaming out of the fog."
Reason: If the Russians are attacking (witch they are) then since this book is through the eyes of a German soldier if Russia is attacking Germany it means its World War II.
1. I think the story will end with most of erik's (authors) comrades dead because the story has already shown how fast his friends can die like when Hals dies and Oskar die but also end at the end of the war and when the Germans surrender so now erik can like a normal life without war. (or whats left of his life anyway)
Do I have a partner or not? I'm the only one who has posted on this blog.
ReplyDeleteThis is a book filled of adventure and I would recommend to anyone. My Favorite part of this book is when Soldier X uses both languages to confuse the enemy.
