Blood on the River by Elisa Carbone

Twelve-year-old Samuel Collier is a lowly commoner on the streets of London. So when he becomes the page of Captain John Smith and boards the Susan Constant, bound for the New World, he can't believe his good fortune. He's heard that gold washes ashore with every tide. But beginning with the stormy journey and his first contact with the native people, he realizes that the New World is nothing like he imagined. The lush Virginia shore where they establish the colony of James Town is both beautiful and forbidding, and it's hard to know who's a friend or foe. As he learns the language of the Algonquian Indians and observes Captain Smith's wise diplomacy, Samuel begins to see that he can be whomever he wants to be in this new land.

  1. 1. One quote that identifies that it is a historical fiction is "How do you know the language of those natives?"p34.
    2. Samuel is an important character because he is the narrator of the story and is the closest to John Smith. He is also a orphan.
    3. The setting is on a ship, in Virgina and on a few islands in the Caribbean.
    4. Three references that make it historical are, 1 they call America the new world, 2 they don't have toilets, 3 there are natives on the islands they stay on.

#1 Captain Smith translates for our leaders. Our visitors say that within the Powhatan empire, there are tribes who are our friends, and some who are our enemies. p103

This quote describes the book as historical fiction because the visitors are Indians.

#2 Then one day I hear the words I’ve been dreading “Savages!” “Arm yourselves!” “We’re under attack!”p102

This quote describes the book as an historical fiction because savages are Indians.

    Part2
#1 I predict that the book will end when Samuel dies. I think this because there seems to be no ending coming in the story. Also Samuel is the narrator of the story, so who would narrate the story in the end of the book. Samuel is going to the native’s tribe, Captain Smith does not think it will go well.

    2. He is a vary important character, James and Richard are kind of main cahracters too, but they're not talked abouut alot in the story though.
    3. It also takes place in London, Kind of.
    4. I said exactly the same thing except for the last one.
(PS Ένα απόσπασμα που προσδιορίζει ότι είναι μια ιστορική μυθιστοριογραφία είναι «πώς ξέρετε τη γλώσσα εκείνων των, means, one quote that identifies that it is a historical fiction is Boom! There was a loud crackle as the connons shot the last of the shells at the natives.)

  6. 1. The main problem in the book was the natives, they killed of a lot of settlers and would not trade with them in the end of the book. The problem was solved when the settlers killed all the natives.
    2. My prediction was incorrect because Samuel did not die and became a very important person.
    3. I liked this book because there is a lot you can learn from it and it is also very enjoyable. Three reasons I liked this book are 1). I felt like I was actually in the book when Samuel tries on his armor. 2). I could here the sea when Samuel was on the ship. 3). I felt really sad for Samuel when James died.

  7. 1. 1. as the dark figure moved into the shadows, I shouted out "высоко?" (hello?) I turned around and a split second after I heard the twang of about hundreds of arrows that flew right out of the bushes.

    2. After the attack there was a cry that pierced the night silence like all the demons of hell had been unleashed.

    2. I predict that captain Smith will die in the end, and Richard will become friends with Samuel.

  8. 1. Just as the prophecy had predicted, the Powhatan empire was destroyed by a new tribe that arrived from the Chesapeake bay.
    2. I would recommend this book to everyone 4th grade and above because it is a really good book and a little violent to.

  9. 1. The main problem in the book was the Indians. They were almost always in a fight with the settlers.
    2. My prediction was 50 50 right, Captain smith does die but, Richard and Samuel weren't the best of friends.
