Chains by Laurie Halse Anderson

As the Revolutionary War begins, thirteen-year-old Isabel wages her own fight... for freedom. Promised freedom upon the death of their owner, she and her sister, Ruth, in a cruel twist of fate become the property of a malicious New York City couple, the Locktons, who have no sympathy for the American Revolution and even less for Ruth and Isabel. When Isabel meets Curzon, a slave with ties to the Patriots, he encourages her to spy on her owners, who know details of British plans for invasion. She is reluctant at first, but when the unthinkable happens to Ruth, Isabel realizes her loyalty is available to the bidder who can provide her with freedom.

  1. 1. I made my way along the streets seen only by cats, rats, and a slave hurrying with a bundle on her head.
    2. I think that Ruth is an important character because she was the one that encouraged Isabel to spy on their master and give the information to the patriots.
    3. The setting of the book is in America, in summer, and in the 1700's when slavery exsisted.
    4. The first thing that proves that this book is historic is that George Washington wasn't even president yet. They didn't even have presidents back then. Slavery still exsists in the book. And last, people still are loyal to the king of England.

  2. 1. I picked the quote "Pastor weeks sat at the front of his squeaky wagon with Old Ben next to him the mules reins loose in his hands.
2.Isabel is important because her mom has died and dad killed. Isabel and her she mast stay tougth to stay a live and find freedom.
    3. Old town lots of trees the story is in the 1776.
4.It is historical fiction it is histore but it is not all ture. Isabel

  3. 1. " We don't hold with slaves being auctioned on our front steps. Won't stand for it " This text is historical ficton because slaves weren't around until the 1800's or earlier, and slaves were treated ruthlessly now they call them servants, but they get paid, and are more kind and gentle now.
    2. I picked Isabel because Isabel is helping the rebels by spying, and that makes up a big part of this story, trying to help the rebels and get freedom. She is also taking risks to protect Ruth to which is too young to know to be quite and do what you are told.
3.The setting takes place in Hartsborn New York, in the year 1776. Most of the setting is in the Lockton's house which is big, and fancy. In the inside of the Lockton's house there is a cellar. In the cellar is where Isabel and Ruth sleep on a cot. On the next floor there is the kitchen which Isabel has to start a fire in every morning. In the kitchen there is a table and a pot over a fire. There is also a back door which goes out to the court yard where they peel patatoe's. Also there is a living room which they have meeting with important people and have tea. The next floor has a Mr. Lockton's special library where you have to be invited in. There is a lot of books. Now the last room is Madams room and it is big and spacious and is very nice.
3.This is called historical fiction because it take place in earlier in life where there wasn't much freedom. That a lot of rich people have slaves. Some rich people weren't as mean. You were responsible for an accident.

  4. 1. I agree with my partner because no one really now days has a wagon with mules pulling the wagon. Also that wagons are only used every once in a while, and you don't see anyone driving down the road in a wagon.
2." I thought it would be easy. I would run straight to the shed behind Bellingham's house tap on Curzon's window, tell him the news and hurry home" (p.65). This is like my partners because Isabel is fighting for her freedom by trying to get free from the Locktons.
3.The difference from the settings is they tell the setting from the outside, and I told the setting from the inside. I told about the Lockton's house and the fancyness and they told about the outside and what it looks like. What is the same is that we agree on the year that this took place.
4.It is true that in life today they don't have slaves, but they made a type of slave like a servant. Servants get paid, and they accually want to be there to work for the people.

  5. 1. I agree with this quote because nowadays people have cars, not wagons to ride around in.
    2. "I handed him the list and quickly told him everything I knew."(pg. 105)
    3. The time is correct and the main setting is correct, I also agree that it is an old town.
    4. Rich people nowadays have servants instead of slaves. The rich people pay their servants and they treat them A LOT BETTER.

  6. 1. Yes you are very right because saves are in that time.
2.if i cried a river, maybe i could swim away, or slip under the water to freedom p147. I think you pick Isabel because she is a spy for the rebels.
3.yours was super detail and so right. Me mine was ok but not as detail.
4.The saves taday are not saves they servants and they got payed.

  7. I left to fetch fresh water. p163 They have to leave to go get fresh water now we turn on the sink.
    1. I think it will and when Isabel finds Ruth and they freedom. She talks to the rebls and tries to join and got her freedom and go find Ruth.
    2. Finding Ruth and they freedom. Isabel will join the army and get her freedom then go get Ruth. Isabel because she saves the live of lady Semour and is the best sitter because she looks out for the good of Ruth.

  8. Part 1
1.“After two days in the dungeon, the noonday sun scalded my eyes” (p. 146). This text is historical fiction because when people break the law they don’t put them in dungeons any more. They’re more likely keep them above ground now days and in cells.
“ The man pushed the hot metal against my cheek. It hissed and bubbled. Smoke curled under my nose” (p. 148). This text is historical fiction because for punishment for doing something bad or was thought to be bad they did not brand the person, all they did was throw them in jail. Also no one now days gets branded, and if they did they did it themselves and wasn’t forced to.
    Part 2
1.In the end I think the book will end like this the Isabel’s masters find out that the rebels have been sabatouging over night, and that they have recruted over 4,000 people to fight. So in the middle of the night the Lockton’s fled and they leave Isabel behind. Then Isabel goes to the rebel’s in search of her sister, but then she finds someone who knows her sister and Isabel goes to work for them.
    2. The main problem that Isabel is faceing is having her sister be sent off to another Master. How this can be resolved it Isabel somehow finds someone that will take her there secretly, and that the masters will take her in, and no one will know.
3.One important character is Madam Lockton. Why Madam Lockton is important is because she keeps on edging Isabel on and on until she can’t hold it, so it makes Isabel try harder to escape. Then when Isabel finally succeds in escaping she will go to Ruth and they will work together on Ruth’s new masters house.

  9. Sorry I only posted one quote here's the other one. Why don’t the bells ring alarm p194 In the old days when something happen that was not right the bells on a church will ring for alarm.

  11. 1. I agree that Isabel and Ruth will be able to go home because of history. The patriots will beat the invading forces and all slaves will be released.
    2. "I wanted to grab her by the hair and throw her down the stairs, throw her out the window, and beat her face with my fists." This proves that the problem is important because Isabel almost killed Madam Lockton.
    3. "One more step and I can have you hung."Madam whispered. This supports that Madam Lockton is important because, she could kill Isabel if she wanted.

  12. 1. I agree with my partner that Isabel will go to the rebels and get her freedom, and then she will find Ruth. Why I think Isabel will do this is because Isabel is persistant and will do whatever it takes to get Ruth back. Also all those times she's tried to escape she would probably get a chance where she could make it.
2." I prayed I would not faint from fear and tried again for the captain's attention. I can cook sir, I said, i can wash, sew even doctor the sick a little"(p. 179). This supports my partners problem because my partner said that Isabel was trying to join the army so she could venture off, and find Ruth. In this she is trying to convince the captin to let her be on his army.
3." Once on the ground floor, she tried to walk, but one of her legs was failing her, I opened the front door and dragged the two of us out to the street"(p. 193).How this supports the character is because my partner said that they picked Isabel because she saved Lady Seymour, and this is the quote of when Isabel dragged the two of them out of the burning fire.

  13. 1. Slavery was the main problem in the book. I don't think the main problem was solved because Isabel didn't find Ruth and they didn't make there way home.
    2. My prediction was incorrect. Isabel never saw Ruth again. In the end Isabel ended up running away.
    3. I love this book! It had me reading and reading! Isabel had so many tragedies like losing her parents, losing her freedom, and losing her sister. Out of 5 stars I would give this book 10!

  14. 1. The problem was Isabel needed to get to her sister. She ran to go find her sister.
    2. I know she was going to run away. I was right because I know she was going to run away.
    3. The book is not so good because they is no acten to it so it is not good. All Isabel dos is eat, sleep and work. Ruth is forgeten and she is not very actcenen. Madem is mean, yes but most to all masters of saves are that way.

  15. 1.The main problem in this book was that Ruth and Isabel were trying to get freedom because when Miss Mary Finch died she said they were free, but that did not happen. This problem of slavery was solved by Isabel trying one last time to escape from Madam Lockton, and she also went the jail rescuing Curzon. Then they ran all the way down to the warf and got on a boat and excaped to Charrelestown, and Ruth was in Charrelstown so Ruth escaped and they are free.
2.In my prediction of the end was not right. The rebels were getting better and beating some of the patriots in battle, but the Locktons did not fled, and Isabel wasn't left behind. Also Isabel didn't go to the rebels and find someone who knew her sister, but she did get her freedom. What was unexpected was that she got Curzon out of the prison easily and that they made it all the way to the boat. Also that they made it to Charrelstown without getting caught. Another unexpected thing was that Madam Lockton did not sell Ruth but instead kept her.
    3. My opinion of the book Chains is that is was a well written, something about what could have happened, and a mystery to be solved. Three examples of this is it is well written because she tells the characters feelings, and of how they scattered their thoughts of how they were going to do things. This could have happened in the 1700's because there was a lot of slaves back then, and during the book she discribed a lot of young slaves and they could of had the same predicatment as Ruth and Isabel. It was a mystery to be solved because you never really knew of how Isabel was going to escape or what was going to happen when she got branded like what were people going to treat her like with that on her cheek.

  16. 1." Twenty paces of open street seperrated us from the shadows on the other side" (p. 297). This supports my partners solution because it shows that Isabel was really thinking of how she was going to get free. This also shows she was really careful with her timing so she could get across safely.
    2. I would recommend this book to people who show interest in slaves, and people who have more struggles in there lifetime then we will ever have. This book would also be good for people who like stuff about history or something that could of happened, but this book wouldn't be good for people who don't like to wait for action or don't like it when it takes forever to get to the action parts. This book would also be good for people who wanted to know what slaves lives were like when there masters treated them so poorly. Why I would recomend this to them is because they will find out it's one of the best books they have read because it fits their interests.

  17. 1. Runaways! Isabel Gardner and companion Curzon Bellingham. If a newspaper could say that they are gone, then they are long gone.
    2. I would recommend this book to everybody! True there are sad parts but there always are. I usually don't like book like these, but Chains makes the cut!
