Elephant Run by Roland Smith

In 1941, bombs drop from the night skies of London, demolishing the apartment Nick Freestone lives in with his mother. Deciding the situation in England is too unstable, Nick's mother sends him to live with his father in Burma, hoping he will be safer living on the family's teak plantation.

But as soon as Nick arrives, trouble erupts in the remote Burmese elephant village. Japanese soldiers invade, and Nick's father is taken prisoner. Nick is left stranded on the plantation, forced to work as a servant to the new rulers. As life in the village grows more dangerous for Nick and his young friend, Mya, they plan their daring escape. Setting off on elephant back, they will risk their lives to save Nick's father and Mya's brother from a Japanese POW camp.

In this thrilling journey through the jungles of Burma, Roland Smith explores the far-reaching effects of World War II, while introducing readers to the fascinating world of wild timber elephants and their mahouts.

  1. 1. The year is 1941 bombs are dropping from the night skies blanketing London.
    1. The reason this is historical fiction is because the year is 1941 and it's in world war II

    2. Nick is an important person because he's the main character and because he helps Mya get his brother back and his father.

    3. The setting in the book is on a teak plantation in India and the story took place in Burmese at the time of world war II in 1941.

    4. This book s historical fiction because it all happend in 1941 during world war II.

  2. 1. “The Nazis called the bombing raids blitzkrieg, or lightning war.The British simply called it “The blitz” (pg. 2). I think that this makes it a historical fiction book because the Nazis only existed in WWII, in the 1940s.

    2. Nick is an important character because he is the main character, from my point of view.

    3. The setting of the book is in Burma in the 1940s during WWII (World War Two). I think it takes place then because "the blitz" was only during this time period.

    4. The book is called a historical fiction book because it has world war two references/characters in it. Three references to history that it made so far are the reference to the blitz in London, the Japanese prisoner of war camps, and the third is the Japanese taking over Burma.

  3. 1. I agree with you because your answer is almost the exact same as mine.

    2. "It was a foregone conclusion, at least in Nick's mind, that he would one day return to Burma and eventually take over the family forestry business"(pg.27).

    3. I think our settings are mostly the same, only you remembered to say that it was on a teak plantation.

    4. I can relate your number one (The quote) and my number one to life today because it is like that in Iraq, even though there is rumor that the Americans aren't in there any more.

  4. 1. I agree with your post because it's like mine.

    2. I think you picked Nick as the main character because he made a haiku Golden fish tickle my feet in the morning sun (p. 166.) to not get in trouble with Sonji.

    3. In my post I didn't think of the Nazi's and in yours you did. You also mentioned the blitz and I forgot all about the blitz.

    4. In your post there's war and today there's still war in the same area but not as bad as in that time.

  5. 1. I have another quote it's in the 3 part of the book on (p. 221) it says venerable sir, I respectfully to ordain me as a novice in order that I may be free from the cycle of existence and attain nirvana. I think this is historical fiction because it happend in the past and that it was when the japanese were there. The second quote I have today is on page 217 I have a disguise. It won't be perfect though. I think it's historical fiction because he's explaining what they have to do to get into the camp.

    2. I think that they will get nick's father out and mya's brother. For one reason is nick has got a ton of information so they could probably get in and out without being noticed.

    3. Right now nick is in the middle of trying to get a plan together to get his father out of the labor camp.

    4. I think that mya is important because she has good judement and that she is willing to risk her life to get her brother out of the labor camp.

  6. Part 1-Quotes
    1. “One more thing.” His Father lowered his voice. “I need to tell you something about the house. There are secret-” (Passages) (pg. 123)
This is a historical fiction book because most houses don’t have secret passages any more.

    2. “Nick was certain he would find a way to punish him later.”

This is a historical fiction book because people don’t really like to punish people anymore.

    Part 2-Questions
    1. I predict that Nick will save his dad and get to India but his dad will die because he is sick, I think this because he is sick in the story right now.
    2. The currant problem they are facing now is that they can’t get out without the Colonel knowing. I don’t know how they will get out of this situation.
    3. The character Hilltop has been important because he has been the main source of information for Nick and company.

  7. I think that your prediction is correct because in the book they're in the middle of escaping.

  8. 1. I think that I agree with you, your prediction seems a bit more reasonable and a lot less sad then mine does.

    2. "Your best source of information for that will be Hilltop" (pg. 122) This supports the problem that you chose because it says that Nick still has friends on the plantation.

    3. "There must be another way" said Nick."

  9. 1. The main problem in the book was that there was war all over and the Japanese took over the plantation. The problem was solved because they fought back.

    2. I was not correct with my prediction I thought that they would be in slaved all of the book.

    3. My opinion of this book is that it is a really good book and that it's not one I would read again. I feel this way because I don't really read war books very often. I don't usually like war books. It is one that you could read over and over but I wouldn't.

  10. 1. The main conflict in the book was that Japan had taken over Burma and Nick had to get out. They resolved it by escaping from Hawks Nest after living in the walls for a few weeks, and then getting his father out with the help of Sergent Sonji, then getting out on elephant back and going to Australia.

    2. My prediction was right and wrong. It was wrong because Nicks father didn't die, but it was right because Nick, Mya, Nick's father, and Indaw got out alive.

    3. My opinion of the book is that it is really, really good. I think it is good because it is set in WWII, it takes place in the jungle, and, last but not least, it has a LOT of elephants in it (I like Elephants).

  12. 1."'The nats are restless," Magwe said with a slight smile. "The Japanese should have paid closer attention to them. There's going to be an accident up at the airfield tonight. The soldiers have been very careless with their bombs and ammunition. The Colonel has warned them they could go of at any time" (pg. 225)

    2. I would recommend this book to people who don't really mind the kind of war book that leaves some of the squishy bits in it because if you don't like things with the squishy bits left in it, you might not like it very much.
