Jason's Gold by Will Hobbs

"Gold!" Jason shouted at the top of his lungs. "Read all about it! Gold discovered in Alaska!"
Within hours of hearing the thrilling news, fifteen-year-old Jason Hawthorn jumps a train for Seattle, stow away on a ship bound for the goldfields, and joins thousands of fellow prospectors attempting the difficult journey to the Klondike. The Dead Horse Trail, the infamous Chilkott Pass, and a five-hundred-mile trip by canoe down the Yukon River lie ahead. With help from a young writer named Jack London, Jason and his dog face moose, bears, and the terrors of a subartic winter in this bone-chilling survival story.

  1. 1) quote: "you were there in '49?"
I think this identified it as a historical fiction because it shows that that the people in the book were old enough fore the people in the book to be born in 1849

    2) character: Jason
Jason is an important character because he is the main character and he is so determined to find his brothers.I also really like how he respects animals and loves them.

    3) This book took place in Alaska and Canada in the year or 1897

    4) This book is called a historical fiction because it takes place in 1897, it was during the gold rush in Klondike, and a fancy meal at a restaurant was only $3.

  2. 1. "Jack's Brother-in-law was a sixty year old veteran of the war of the states.

    2. Jason is important because he is the main character and because he is the youngest Person to go luck for gold.

    3. The setting of the book is in North America in 1897.

    4. This book is called a Historical fiction text because it happened in the 1890's, and that was over a hundred years ago. Three references i have discovered are The year it happened,1897, the job Jason has in the beginning of the book, and how they give death sentences to thieves.

  3. 1) I agree with your quote, I never even noticed that one

    2) "He was proud of carrying his fathers name" p.24

    3) I have the same setting.

    4) you can relate to your quote because two day there are many war and many people have brothers in the war

  4. 1. I agree with your Quote. 1849 was along time ago and I think that right there says it's a historical fiction.

    2. " The New York steak, it really had gone bad." (pg.65)

    3. Alaska and Canada are part of North America, but remember that Jason had to travel in the states of a few days.

    4. A $3 meal. The only place I can think of to get prices like that today is... nowhere.

  5. 1)HF Quote 1 "Through every sort of weather, he and the husky kept it up: nine backbreaking trips up Long Hill, nine agonizing times up the Golden Stairs." page:94 I piked this quote because if it were in the times or today there would probably be sum kind of transportation or car they would have used.
HF Quote 2 "along the lake Jason found twenty or so boats under construction" page:81 I thought this quote makes it a historical fiction because if they were going to use a boat they would have probably just buy it.

    2) I think the story will end with Jason finding his brothers and becoming rich. I think this will happen because that is exactly what Jason has set aught to do and as Jack said they are both very determand.

  7. hear is the rest of yesterdays blog:

    3) The current problem is that Jason has not been able to find his brothers yet, and he has lost to much time to make it there before winter breaks and then he might not even be able to find his brothers, the other problem he is in is that he might not have enough food fore the winter.

    4) One of the important character in the book is King because without him Jason probably would not have been able to carry all his stuff this fare and he would be without a good campanyun.

  8. 1)The main problem was that Jason had to get to his brothers in Dawson but there were a lot of obstacles along the way, such as you know getting asked by a moos or a bear or like having this 12 year old boy left with him to die and feed, oh and don't mention almost starving or freezing. That problem was resolved was that he Jason kept on going and never gave up and eventually reached his brothers.

    2) I was partly correct about him finding his brothers, but instead of becoming rich with gold his brothers had started a saw mill and instead they mad money from that.

    3) I really did like this book because it was a good adventure and it was not that predictable, I would have never guest Jason would end up having to stay in a cabin all winter or that his dog would be killed by a bear. It was also very interesting and different from any book I have ever read, I have never read a book about a gold rush or ever thought about what it would be like.

  9. Quote 1: “My Dad and i are Canadians. We got klonditics, a very bad case of it too!” Klonditics was over a hundred years ago. 1897, very long time ago. pg.70

Quote 2: ”If you don’t have an outfit, then you better head home, son. I’m sorry.” I think this is a historical fiction text because who says “son” to a stranger? pg.82

Prediction: I think the story will end by jason finding his brothers, then yelling at his brothers because they took his money, then hugging them after being gone for a year. I think this because Jason is working so hard, is almost getting caught in dead ends, and if he doesn’t find his brothers, well then this book is not as good as I hoped.

Problem: Jason’s problem right now is to catch up to his brothers. i think this problem will be solved by jason hitching a ride from a stranger and getting to the gold by or shortly after his brothers.

Character: Jack London is an important character because he keeps Helping Jack when ever they meet.

Your Quote: I disagree with your quote because people still makes boats today. Some do buy them, others like a project to work on.

Problem quote: “ Never even had to build a boat, those two. They hit it off with two fellows who’d started building a boat here before news of the klondike strike ever got to the states.” This supports the problem because it shows that Jason’s brothers didn’t have to wait to get a boat to go to klondike.

Your Character choice quote: “ Now, that’s a dog. Is it for Sale?” This shows that King is a good, healthy dog, and people want to buy him.

The main problem: The main problem was that Jason had to catch up to his brothers. The problem was solved by Jason and Charlie when they were in the Golden City and came upon a “Hawthorn Brothers Sawmill”. Jason told the clerk he wanted a job and to meet the owners of the mill.

My Prediction was: My prediction was right expect that Jason didn’t yell at his brothers. I was right about Jason finding his brothers and hugging them after not seeing them for a year and a half.

My opinion: I liked this book because it had allot of action, like Jason Almost dyeing 250 miles short from a moose. I also liked this book because it had an
interesting story line, “A fifteen year old boy goes to Alaska/Canada alone to find his brothers.” The last reason I like this book is because the time period is when there wasn’t much technology and know how of much, but Jason still found away to find his brothers.
