Rodzina by Karen Cushman

Rodzina Clara Jadwiga Anastazya Brodski is the new face in Karen Cushman"s gallery of unforgettable heroines. One of a group of orphans, 12-year-old Rodzina boards a train on a cold day in March 1881. She"s reluctant to leave Chicago, the only home she can remember, and she knows there"s no substitute for the family she has lost. She expects to be adopted and turned into a slave--or worse, not to be adopted at all.

As the train rattles westward, Rodzina unwittingly begins to develop attachments to her fellow travelers, even the frosty orphan guardian, and to accept the idea that there might be good homes for orphans--maybe even for a big, combative Polish girl. But no placement seems right for the formidable Rodzina, and she cleverly finds a way out of one bad situation after another, until at last she finds the family that is right for her.

  1. As I was reading this book,I wondered why she couldn't see the optimistic side of having a new family?
I also wonder why Rodzina won't open up to Lacey?
Another question that I have, is that does Mr. Szprot really eat better food than the orphans?
    How did Rodzina's parents die?
I think the book is good because I like how there is a journey to a place that you don't know what is going to happen there.

  2. Will Rodzina be adopted? Will they be a nice family? Do they have any children? Is she going to have to work like a slave like she was told? So far, this book is very interesting because Rodzina is telling the story and looking back to times when her family was still alive.

  3. Why and how did she become an orphan?
    What is Paczki Day?
What does her name mean in Polish?
How would you feel if you were Rodzina?

  4. Rachael, Rodzina's dad died from a loose horse that stepped on his head and her mom died of a fever.
K and X, if I were Rodzina, I would feel sad and alone all the time.

  5. Rachael, Rodzina is scared to have a different family than her own. Also she's jealous of Lacey's hair and she calls Rodzina: Ro, plus she's annoying.

  6. Rachael, we think that Mr. Szprot does get better food than the orphans because he got to go into the train stop with the restaurant with Miss Doctor.

  7. 1: "On a cold Monday in March,1881, twenty-two orphan children with stiff new clothes and cardboard suitcases stood on the train station platform waiting to get on a special railway car."(p.1) The year is in the past and the event is in history. 2: "I looked longingly at the steak others were eating, but it was fifty cents and I remembered what Miss Doctor had said about being far from rich."(p.174) Back then there wasn't many woman doctors so they had little money because they didn't get many jobs. 3: "I smiled so big lips hurt. I leaned up against Doctor Cat's shoulder, but I could not sleep. I was so happy, it was like music in my head."(p.202) Rodzina was so happy because someone finaly wanted her.

  8. Since Mr. Szprot get bore authority than the orphans, he should at least be just a little nice to the them and I was surprised he actually stood up for one of them. He socked that guy when he hit Sammy. (I think)
