The Tears of the Salamander by Peter Dickinson

Alfredo, a choir boy in 18th-century Italy, loses his family in a fire, and his mysterious Uncle Giorgio spirits him away to their ancestral home below a volcano. There he learns that Uncle Giorgio is the Master of the Mountain; he can control the volcano. He is also an alchemist, able to make gold from the tears of the fiery salamander he captured from the heart of the mountain. Alfredo is his heir, the next Master; and as Alfredo learns the history of his family and its power, he begins to suspect that his uncle is actually a fearsome sorcerer.

  1. 1. He was a tall, elegant man, wigged, with a sword at his hip. He wore a brocade gray trimmed dress coat, brown velvet breeches, white stockings and buckled shoes. His cravat was spotless white and he carried a tricorn under his left arm.(p.16).
    2. Uncle Giorgio has been important because he is the one who gives Alfredo food shelter and clothing.
    3. This story takes place in Italy in the olden days.It is usually described as big and with plenty of trees.
    4. Because it is something in history that has fiction in it. When they were saying in a book when you join choir you have to get surgery. That Alfredo family passes this job of maintaining fire. When the sailors were eating foods that people dont eat anymore.

  3. part1-Quotes: pg42 "people thought of him as a demon and here is no cure for him". This text is historical fiction because in the old days if someone was born with a defect they think of them as a demon.

Partt2-Questions: Why did the angels of fire help uncle Giorgio do the first great work.

  4. I think that Alfredo and Toni will win the fight against uncle Giorgio because, Toni and Alfredo both have the power of fire and it will be 2 against one.

  5. So Alfredo will be come master of the mountain because he came up with the idea of overthrowing uncle Giorgio.

  6. 1. The main problem in the book was how uncle Giorgio treated his own son,and his wife and how he treated other people. Alfredo did solve the problem in the end.
    2. I was correct about Alfredo and Toni winning the fight against Uncle Giorgio. I was right because they both have powers, and the match was uneven. I was wrong about Alfredo being master of the mountain, but instead Toni became Master because he was the true heir.
    3. My opinion of this book is that it is very good an mysterious, adventurous awesome. 1. because of the adventures they go on the ship named the " bonaventura". 2. Uncle Giorgio has a lot of things to hide. 3. Alfredo's and Toni's powers are awesome!

  7. I would recommend this book to someone who likes to read a lot and is interested in geography, music, and fantasy. Because this book is based on music and Alfredo's family background. This book is filled with fantasy, like when Toni was playing the chant and the angel came. This book has a really good geography that you can literally see. so that is why I recommend this book.
