Yellow Star by Jennifer Rozine Roy

"In February 1940, four-and-half-year-old Syvia (later Sylvia) Perlmutter, her mother, father and 12-year-old sister, Dora, were among the first of more than 250,000 Jews to be forced into Poland's Lodz Ghetto. When the Russians liberated the ghetto on January 19, 1945, the Perlmutters were among only 800 people left alive; Syvia, 'one day shy of ten years old,' was one of just 12 children to survive the ordeal.

  1. 1. I think this quote is going to represent this book as a historical fiction, "If God dies who will run the world? I hope it's not the Nazis." Syvia said.

    2. Syvia I think is the important character because, she is the main character and it basically tells her life and how she survived the Holocaust.

    3. The story takes place in Germany, in the years of the 1940's. It is also in the middle of the Holocaust.

4.This book is historical fiction because it takes place in the middle of the Holocaust and it just tells about a random child that really didn't exist.

  2. 1 "Before the Second World War, 233,000 Jews lived in the city of Lodz, Poland."(p. 1) In the quote it says "Before the Second World War."
2 One of the important characters in this book is Syvia. She is the main character and a survivor of the Holocaust.
3 The setting is in Lodz, Poland 1939-1945 and in the ghetto.
4 This book takes place during World War 2

  3. 1. I do also agree with everything you said about your quote, I also looked it up in the book and thought that that is also a good quote.

    2. The quote I picked was "If God dies, who will rule the world?" p.90. The reason I picked this quote is because it describes how she is feeling as she is growing up.

    3. I think that our posts were a little different with the fact I used a little more detail and I think that we both really put it just where the setting is.

    4. For number four I can relate to life saying that there were some people's children that had grandparents that survived the Holocaust.

  4. 1 I agree, The Nazis were only during World War 2.
2 "Shh....shh...."Mother rushes over."not in front of the little one."(pg55)
    3
4 Hitler and the Nazis were the bad people during World War 2. Today there are other people, but not as bad as Hitler.

  5. 1. Quote 1:
“Do the Germans know we are here? Do they they know there are children down here?”
    pg.142
It shows that because it tells that the Germans were involved in something that made young children hide in a down stair place.
    Quote 2:
“ We all know how to hide, to keep quiet so that the Nazis don’t find us.”
    pg. 144
It tells that it is historical fiction because they were calling the Germans Nazis and they don’t want to be found by them so they keep quiet.

    2. I think the story will end with the fact that she got away and lived threw the Holocaust and was one of the only children who did. I say this because it already tole you about how she was the one of the only ones that lived. It tells you that in the introduction on page 2.

3.The current problem for Syvia is that she is becoming very weak in a cellar and she is trying to be very quiet for days and she is not getting any sun or isn’t getting enough nature and she needs a way to get out.
I think she will solve it by just waiting for somebody to sneak her out of the ghetto.

4.I think Syvia is an important character, because she is the person on the cover of the book and is the one that is telling us the story plus it just describes where she is in life.

  6. part 1
1 "In one part of the cellar is a large pile of coal. The grown-ups use it to warm the ovens. (pg. 152-153)
    part 2
1 I predict that the Nazis will lose the war and Syvia`s family will survive.
2The main problem is that Syvia is stuck in a cellar with 11 other children. The Nazis don`t know they are in the cellar and they have to be quiet. At least the Nazis are losing the war.
3 Dora is an important character because without her Syvia would only have Baby Issac as a friend.

  7. 1 I agree with your prediction. I think that Syvia and her family will survive.
2 "I am tired. Tired of being inside this this cellar. Tired of being afraid. Tired of being me."(pg.166) Syvia does not like it in the cellar but she has to be in there or she will be found by the Nazis.
3 "Syvia," he whispers fiercely "it is not your fault. It is the fault of the Nazis." (pg. 121)

  8. 1 The main problem is that the Nazis have taken over Poland and have forced the Jews into a ghetto. This problem was solved by the Russians coming to liberate the 800 Jews that were still in the ghetto.
2 My prediction was correct because Syvia`s family did survive. It was unexpected that the Russians came to liberate the Jews. I thought it would be the Americans.
3 This book was sad, exciting, and a little bit funny. "But everywhere he has been is the same thing. No Jews left alive."(pg.223) "We are liberated! We are free! People start yelling and some begin to dance. The Nazis are defeated!"(pg.217) "Mmmm...perfume of pear. Dora told me that rich and famous people were perfumes of fruit and flowers. Now, so do I."(pg.171)

  9. 1 "The Russians! Coming to rescue us from the Germans!"
2 I would recommended this book to people who like books that are historical fiction. This book is sad and intense. It is a true story about Syvia Perlmutter.

  10. 1. What was the main problem in your book? How was this problem solved?
The problem was that Syvia was in the Holocaust and had no way to get out. The problem was solved by her hiding for years of her life.
    2. Were you correct with your prediction of how the book would end? What were you right about?
I wasn’t completely correct about it but the things that I was right about was her family surviving.
3.What is your opinion of this book? Did you love it, hate it, tolerate it, like it? Why do you feel the way you feel? Give three examples to support you answer.

My opinion of this book is that I liked it a little bit.
I feel that way because I don’t like reading about horrible things that much. My first example is that it was talking about horrible things that happened to the Jews. Number two is that they say that the children have went through tough things like sitting in a cellar for days and weeks at a time. Three is it wasn’t very pleasant when I tried to picture some of those things in my head.
