Kek comes from Africa where he lived with his mother, father, and brother. But only he and his mother have survived. Now shes missing, and Kek has been sent to a new home. In America, he sees snow for the first time, and feels its sting. He wonders if the people in this new place will be like the wintercold and unkind. But slowly he makes friends: a girl in foster care, an old woman with a rundown farm, and a sweet, sad cow that reminds Kek of home. As he waits for word of his mothers fate, Kek weathers the tough Minnesota winter by finding warmth in his new friendships, strength in his memories, and belief in his new country.

The book I read was Home of the Brave by In it there’s a boy named Kek who was from Africa. He came to America to go to his aunt’s house and live there because of the people with guns. When he got to America he had a hard time speaking English, doing the things others did. But after he got the job working at a farm he stated to get the routines. A girl named Hannah from his class that lives in his apartment that helps him try new things. One day he decides that he’s had enough so he tries tho run away but his cousin Ganwar came and got him and told him that he wishes that everything went back to the way it was and that made him feel better. He’s still trying to find his mom that he lost back in Africa, but will he find her and live happily ever after or will he look for her till his death?
ReplyDeleteI really like this book because it gives realistic emotions and events. It was just like when I came to America and didn’t know what to do or how to speak. I know they show real emotions because I’ve been through what Kek’s been through. So I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a heart-felt book.

In this story Kek is a boy who just moved from africa and moved to Minneapolis, Minnesota, He can’t really fit in with the kids at the school in Minnesota. Hids make fun of him! He befriends a girl named Hannah, She shows Kek around the city.
He try’s to help around the house by cleaning the dishes, But he accidentally puts the dish’s in the cloths washing machine! He felt so bad that he got a job helping out on a farm taking care of a cow to pay for new dishes! He eventually pays for new ones and enough money to spare to buy Hannah a chocolate for Valentine’s day!
Ganwar helps out on the farm too, and the owner of the farm Mrs. Low tells everyone that she can’t pay for the farm anymore and the farm will be shutting down, Kek is mad and runs away. Kek is sad and then Ganwar try’s to cheer Kek up, Eventually Kek understands and goes back to the farm. The character in the story are Kek, Ganwar, Hannah, mrs. Low and Dave. It takes place in Minneapolis MN
Personally i really liked the book it is my 2nd favorite book 1st is cracker. It was very good and touching. i give it 9.7/10

So Kek goes to school and learns how to speak english in ESL class. He meets a girl named Hannah and she teaches him how to ride the bus go to the mall, and stuff like that. Kek tries to do the dishes for his aunt and accidentally puts them in the cloths washing machine, and they all break. Kek feels really bad about breaking the dishes so him and his cousin Ganwar get a job at a farm. and kek eventually gets enough to by new dishes. I thought this book was very good and touching and written well.

The book I’m reading is Home of the Brave. This book is about this boy named Kek.He used to live in Africa, but now he moved to Africa because the people with guns.He met this man named Dave, he was the one who helped Kek alot.Kek had trouble speaking english and learning knew things in America.One day he thought he can dry the dishes in the drying machine, but when he heared a big THUMP he knew that the dishes broke, so then he told his aunt and he told her that he will buy knew ones, but first he has to find a job.He found a job at a farm.He works for a girl named Lou, she’s old and she said that she might have to move out of the farm.Kek gets sad and yells at her, the next day he doesn’t go to work, and the next.He feels bad that he yelled at Lou and she didn’t do nothing.He thinks that he can run away.While he was in the bus, trying to go to the airport, he tolded the bus driver to stop, the bus driver stoped at Lou’s farm, he went to pet the cow which her name is Gol.He went up this tree, Gol followed him, she kept on staring at him, looking up at the tree, waiting for him to get down and scrathed her behind her ear.Ganwar comes he looks at Gol, then walks, but then he saw Kek on the tree, he climbs up the tree, he laughs.Kek told Ganwar that he wants to find his mom, he doesn’t want to have bad dreams about her getting killed anymore.Will Kek find her mom or will he find out that she is died?

In the book Home of the Brave there is a boy named Kek and he is really worried that his mother will not come back and that he will never learn english. The reason he is worried that his mother wont come back is because they are from somewhere across the ocean and when they were leaving because there was a war. Kek had to leave his mother behind because she had fallen and she told him to leave her there. He did not want to leave his mother there but what could he do die?? So he left her and he was so scared and the people who were helping him were looking in the concentration camps and to know if they found Kek’s mom you will have to read the book.
ReplyDeleteI thought that it was a good book because it was very suspenseful and you never know what is going to happen next. I would recommend this book if you like books you don;t want to put down.

In the book Home of the Brave Kek’s village gets attacked and he has to leave his mom behind. He goes to live with his aunt and cousin. He tries to get used to living in America but everything is very different than how he lived when he lived in America. Then he meets Gol, a cow that lives on a farm, one thing that is the same from when he lived in Africa. He gets a job on the farm that Gol lives on. When the owner announces she has to sell the farm and Gol, Kek gets mad and quits his job. When Kek quits his job he start to hang out with the neighbor Hannah. Kek feels bad about how he treated the owner of the farm and goes to apologize. When he does he gets an idea sh that they don’t have to sell Gol. Will he ever see his mom again and will his plan for Gol work?

Home Of The Brave is about a boy named Kek who goes through hard times and an amazing journey after an attack back in his village. His brother and dad was killed from people with guns and he was left running away with his mom, his mom was left behind so she told him to run for safety. His mom went missing and Kek was left and was sent to America where his uncle, aunt and cousin Ganwar lives. He meets new people like a girl name Hannah, a woman named Lou who owns a farm, and a cow who he named Gol. He gets a job at the farm to take care of Gol the cow who he desires and cares for. He goes through hard time thinking about the past and experience things he never done before like how to work a washing machines, making money, getting a job and even riding the buses. Then he decides to run away back where he belongs and to search for his missing mom, but he ends up going back to his uncle's house because his cousin found him, but Kek had an amazing experience when he's in America.
ReplyDeleteI like this book because it shows you clearly what he's going through and what he's been through which could probably touch the probably touch the people who has been through the same thing when they read it and they could connect to it. It's a great book, he's a brave boy.

ReplyDeletelot: Home of the Brave is about a young boy named Kek and he is from Africa and He was sent out to camp in America, His mother and Brother are still in Africa Keks father has passed away a long time ago,Keks mother had made a promise to her son “Kek she would meet him at the American Home after he is done with camp, Kek is done with camp a week later and he meets a man named Dave Kek’s “uncle” from the Refugee Resettlement Center its a place where if something is going wrong in a country then they take them to a new home in tell everything is ok is more like a second father to Kek and Keks think he is vary nice he helps him a lot in the American world and Dave is very concerned on where Keks mother and brother are they were suppose to meet kek a week ago at the American home! Dave brings Kek to this new school and Kek learns a lot of new words and manners and other stuff-But is he forgetting the African Culture?) It has been about 6 weeks in to the book.
~My Opinion of this book is....Well I liked it because of how short the pages are and how intense it gets at the end with the mother being gone and not arriving to America - it was almost like a mystery book and it was very interesting to find out what happens at the end.
I would recommend this book to someone if they don’t like to read very much
because it is very short and easy to Read.

ReplyDeleteIn the book called Home of the Brave, by Katherine Applegate, a boy named Kek moves from Africa to America to live with his aunt and his brothers friend Ganwar, but it is only Kek because his brother and father are dead, and his mother is alive but missing, so Kek is stuck with a problem, and he lives in Minnesota where he saw snow for the first time. Things start to get bad when others make fun of him, until he becomes friends with a girl named Hannah who shows him around and is nice to him and tells him about America. As Kek tries to be normal but when he makes a cleaning mistake and ends up breaking the only dishes in the house, he tries to work to pay for new ones by working at a farm but when the farm has to shut down he runs away because of his love for cows, but as he has a friendship with Hannah he begins to like her and wants to buy her a chocolate for Valentines day. As Kek tries to face that he is in America and that he has to try to learn the way, a chunk of joy happens when his mom is found and is reunited with her.

When he starts getting use to his new country then when he meets this new women named Lou and she lives in a old farm with one animal and it is a cow when Kek went by the farm he said stop to Ganwar and Ganwar stopped Kek got out of the car and went up to the cow, and scatched her ear and when he started see that cow over and over he started working for Lou and Kek named the cow Gaul and Then the name Gaul mean in he’s native language it means Family. When he started staying with Ganwar and his aunt he started going to school he went to ESL to learn american language he never could speek it that well it was always hard for him to say things. Then when Kek went over to Lou’s house she had to tell him something that he wasn’t going to like what she was going to say she said I am moving and then when he said were are going to put Gaul and she said I don’t know. He got mad and he never went back to her farm until one day he said I am going to run away he took the bus and he didn’t even now were he was going and then he asked the bus driver, the bus driver said to the airport Kek said to the airport He said stop to the Bus driver and got out of the bus and went to Lou’s house and climbed up a tree and stayed there, the cow kept on looking at the tree so when Lou say Gaul looking up at the cow she went out side and looked up at the tree and she saw him and she said get down from there she said what are you doing up there he said I am running away she said do you want some cookies before you leave he said I sure I could use some chocolate before I leave but when he said down and ate some cookies with Hannah and Lou he thought over about leaving and he said I am going to stay. After they were done eating there cookies Lou asked if Kek and Hannah can take Gaul to the Zoo Lou said they need a cow so they did a lot of bad things happened when they were on there way to the zoo The cow would not move from out of the road so a police lady help them to get the cow off the road and helped them to get to the Zoo Then when They dropped her off and Hannah kissed her on the nose and Kek said bye.
They left to go back home. Then when he got back home he heard his mothers voice and looked back and it was his mother.
I like this book because It was interesting and sad I would recommend this book to people who like sad things and interesting parts My favorite part is when KeK gets to see his mom agin and my least favorite part is when Lou has to move and they have to get ride of the cow.

My book was Home of the Brave by Katherine Applegate. It was a good book because their was a lot of action in it and it was an old time book. I finished the book and it was about this kid Kek and their village was attacked by some random thing that no one had ever seen.
ReplyDeleteIn the begging Kek moved to Minnesota and he met a lot of new people. On his first day of school when he went to lunch he got his food and he did not no what it was or how to eat it. I thought it was pretty funny because it was chicken and she was like what is this stuff and then she looked around the lunch room and she ate like every one else.
In the middle Kek had a flash back on the attack on their village and Kek said that he was going to go back and find her but he did not because he was afraid that he could not get back home because he thought that their was no planes their. Their was this cow named Gol and Kek would visit Gol every single day because he knew the owner.
In the end they gave gol to a zoo because they wanted Gol to be safe from harm and every thing else.
I think that they should have had the book be about this day not back when they still mud huts and stuff like that. I think that they should make another book but not have someone from another country go to america have an american got to a different country.
My opinion is that I really like the book because it is about america and their are some animals and other things in this story and it is kind of a mystery book. The other reason is that it is about american history which I really like.
I would recommend this to other grades like 4th and 5th because I think that this book would be a good book for them. I would recommend this to my younger brother because he likes adventure and old time books.
I read “Home of the Brave” by Katherine Applegate. It’s about a boy named Kek moving to America from Africa. He’s coming because his dad and his brother both got killed in a fight against some american men trying to take over the territory. He stays at a refugee camp while they look for a home for him. His mom went missing and he wants to stay at the camp ‘tell they find her. They tell him they found a home with his aunt and cousin. He moves in to there apartment and learns about T.V., washing machines, and dish washers. He learns about school and school buses. He meets new friends in his ESL class. One of them lives at his apartment, her name is Hannah. She helps him when his cousin and aunt are gone. She gives him money for bus tickets and for the washer machines. Hannah tells Kek that her birthday is coming up so he buys her a present. While they were talking and Kek gives here the gift a couple of boys tell him to leave Hannah alone. After he leaves he gives his aunt dishes, because he put there dishes in the washer machine.

Home of the brave was a good book. It was about a boy named Kek and he moved to Minnesota from Africa by himself. They are searching for his mom and his dad and brother got killed while they were in Africa. When Kek makes it to Minnesota he is surprised by the snow because he has never seen snow in his whole life till now. He stops at a farm because he sees a cow out in the cold and pets it then left. Then he goes to his aunt’s and cousin’s house and stays there for the night. Then he starts going to school to learn how to speak english and meets hannah and they become friends. Then one day Kek puts the dishes into the washing machine and broke all the dishes so now he has to get a job so he can buy new ones. Then he gets a job at the farm with the cow and then names her Gol which means family in africa. Then The owner of the farm Lou tells him that she is going to sell the farm and Kek gets mad and quits the job. Then Later in the book they still can’t find his mom but they are still searching. Then Kek goes back to the farm and apologizes and get an idea to do with Gol. Then they take Gol to the zoo and on their way Gol stops in the middle of the road and won’t get up and cars are honking at them and yelling. Then the police come and help get Gol out the middle of the road then they escort Kek and the others to the zoo. Then they donate Gol to the petting zoo.

ReplyDeleteKek Immigrated to america and is now living with the other people of America. Kek ends up going to school there and he becomes one of the students in ESL. Kek meats a girl named hannah and they become friends quickly. Hannah tries and shows kek how to was cloths and dishes. Kek thought he was helping his aunt(person that took him in when he immigrated)when he put the dishes in the washing machine and ended up braking all of them.
Kek tries to get a part time job but he coudn’t find one. Then he finds a job at a farm. Kek meets Lou(the one who owns the farm)and her cattle. Lou meets kek and asks him and hannah why they are at her house and while lou asks that Kek grabbed 5 coockies because he didn’t want to be impolite. While Kek is chewing he doesn’t speak so he isn’t impolite and so hannah speaks for him saying that he accidently broke his aunts dishes when he accidently put them in the washing machine.
Kek and his other class mates find out about Keks new part time job taking car of the cattle. He classmates are happy and they think of giving the cattle a name. In the end the name for the cattle became Gol. Gol was really sad as Kek said and Lou isn’t able to pay him too much. At the mall hannah and Kek look for new dishes for his aunt and they find the perfect set but Kek wants a more pretty and expensive one but hannah tells him that we don’t have enough money.
In the end Kek brings Gol to a petting Zoo. Lou moves and everyone is still in america. Kek Learns the american language and yeah.=)
I would recomend this book to anyone that would like a fast read with the poem style writing it would be the best for some fast readers.

When Kek’s whole family were together the soilders started shooting. And killed his father and costed Ganwar’s hand. Kek could find his mother anywhere. Then Kek gets sent to the Refugee camp to learn about like everything in America and how they lived. And then Dave takes Kek to his cousin and aunt. But then Kek wantes Dave to stop by the cow he loved cows back at Africa. Ganwar does not have a job. But Kek got a job from Lou who works with the cow he loved. He met a girl named Hannah. Hannah lives with her foster mom because her real mom sends her money. Hannah helps Kek with money and to fix the broken dishes that Kek put in the washing machine. Then Kek and Hannah hop on a bus and go to Lou’s farm to see the cow. Then Lou says he can the cow anything so he tells classmates and they pick some names so that he can pick. He picked Gol. Everyone agreed they loved that name. Then Hannah and Kek go to the groccery to get food Kek starts crying when he sees the good food the market has. Then Hannah says whe can go if you want and Kek said yes. Then Gol has to go to this place and maybe he will stay read to find out which place and if he will stay.

When Kek tries to fit in, he tries to wash the dishes so that the aunt doesn’t have to. So Kek puts the dishes in the washin machine. That becomes a mess so Kek wants to pay for the dishes he broke but he doesn’t have any money. So Kek tries to get a job but there isn’t many that are fun. Kek loves working with cattle. Kek goes on a bus with Hannah in the city one day and they stop at a farm. Kek wants to go and see the animals to see if there is a cow. Kek knocks on the door and the women say that she is widowed and needs a man to help out with her cow. Kek takes the job and now he is happy to work with the cow. When Kek goes to school he is in ESL because he doesn’t know english that well. So he and his classmates are going to come up with a name for the cow. They all have wonderful names for the cow but Kek wants to name the cow Gol. Gol is an old cow and isnt going to live that long. He was informed this later on in the book. He is very upset. Kek pays back the money for the dishes but he is mad about Gol having to leave. Gol has to go and Kek doesn’t want that to happen. So Gol goes to a petting area in the zoo. Will Kek ever get to see Gol? Will he ever get to see his mother?
