La Linea by Ann Jaramillo

Miguel's life is just beginning. Or so he thinks. Fifteen-year-old Miguel leaves his "rancho" deep in Mexico to migrate to California across "la linea," the border, in a debut novel of life-changing, cliff-hanging moments.  But Miguel's carefully laid plans change suddenly when his younger sister Elena stows away and follows him. Together, Miguel and Elena endure hardships and danger on their journey of desperation and desire, loyalty and betrayal. An epilogue, set ten years after the events of the story, shows that you can't always count on dreams--even the ones that come true.

  1. Hi I read the book called La linea by Ann Jaramillo. This book is about a boy named Miguel who lives in Mexico and his parents are in the USA. His dad asked him if he wanted to go to the USA with him and his mom. He said yes but he had to cross La Linea (The border.) His sister Elena really wants to go but his parents don’t have enough money to let her go to the USA. (She will have to go later.) So then everything is set up. The were going to have a going-away party for the Miguel. They only talk and tell stories about what happens to people who cross the border. Some died, some get lost or some say that they get killed by the goatsucker or la llorona. Some come back because they did not make it to La linea. Miguel’s friend didn’t like to talk about what happen to his father. He came back blind and with all his fingers gone. He doesn’t like to go out to the streets. Then when he is ready to go to the North, he gets on the bus and he meets a new friend. His new friend if a big old grown up. His name was Javi. But then he realizes that his sister followed him!!! Then Javi tricks some guy so that Miguel and Elena can get off the bus. Then they keep up with there journey. They didn’t see Javi Again till they decide that they should take the Mata Gente (The people Killer.) It is a kinda train that gets you across the border with out paying. They see Javi again and then they continue there journey together. Then they find the guy who is going to take them across La Linea. Will they make? Read and find out!!

It is really good. I really enjoyed reading it. It is a sad story because a lot of people die when they cross the border because they want to get to the USA. I think that this book has way to much spanish words that maybe people that speak english don’t understand. If it has to much spanish words than people wont understand the story to much and maybe they will not like it.

    Thanks for reading!!!

  2. La Linea is by Ann Jaramillo. This blog is by Nathan Groe.

This book is about this young guy and his
sister. Their goal is to cross La Linea. Well, they
have to jump on a train to cross La Linea.
They made it on the train
The characters are Miguel, fifteen year old boy, Elena, Miguel’s young sister, and I
forgot what the other character’s name is. They all work together to cross La Linea.
There are obstacles they have to face: the soldiers, and the train
    gang.
They didn’t get taken by the train gang, but some children have been taken by the train gang.
They didn’t get captured by hiding in a train trailer I think.
Then the soldiers jumped on. The hispanics had to get off. Including Miguel, Elena, and Javi. Then they got off. What’s gonna happen next? Read more if you want to find out.
    The main character is Miguel.

I think the story is good because it’s adventurous.

  3. Hi I read the book La linea by Anne Jaramillo. This book is about boy name Miguel. Miguel woke up on his 15th birthday to find a card on the floor from his father. That has been waiting for. The card said “you are ready to come over and see us now because now you are a man”. Go find Don Clement he will help you get over the La linea. Then Miguel went his abulita (gradmother). His gradmother said he is going to be the one who tells his sister he is going to cross La linea to see his father and mother. Elena (his sister) always wanted to see her mother and now Miguel has the chance to go and she can’t go. See to find out if Miguel will take her or leave her.

I loved this book because la linea was so adventrous and bloodthrusting that you would have to read this book. If you love sad but happy endings and adveturous books then this book is for you. Ilhan

I love this book because it tells you about imagrants crossing the border. It’s hard to do that, it’s dangerous. The reason I like it is because it tells you about life, and what happens when people cross the border.
