Notes From the Midnight Driver by Jordan Sonnenblick
16-year-old Alex decides to get even. His parents are separated, his father is dating his former third-grade teacher, and being 16 isn't easy, especially when it comes to girls. Instead of revenge though, Alex ends up in trouble with the law and is ordered to do community service at a senior center where he is assigned to Solomon Lewis, a "difficult" senior with a lot of gusto, advice for Alex, and a puzzling (yet colorful) Yiddish vocabulary. Eventually, the pair learn to deal with their past and each other in ways that are humorous, entertaining, and life-changing.

The story was about a boy named Alex who was mad because his parents constantly fight. So he gets drunk and Takes his mom’s car keys. He crashed the car and hits a lawn gnome. The police comes and he gets sent to care for an eledrly man named Solomon in a nursing home. At first the elderly man is very rude to him. But they have somthing in common. They start to find more about each other. They find out a lot about each other that they never knew about each other. They become friends, then they become more then friends. They start to have a special relationship.

I think it is a good book and exciting. But the thing I don’t like about that book is that Solomon always insults Alex for no reason. It is a hard book to put down if you’re a reader like me.

The book I read was Notes From The Midnight Driver by Jordan Sonnenblick. In this book the main character was Alex. Alex is sixteen and he was drunk driving because his parents where getting into a huge arguement and he wanted attention. Alex went to court and Judge Trent told him he had to surve 100 hours in the nurse home with Soloman Lewis.
ReplyDeleteThe first thing Alex saw when he entered Sol’s room: Sol was watching tv, Surfing thru chanels, not paying any attention to Alex. Sol looked very old and not in great shape. Alex tryed to introduce himself to Sol but it didn’t turn out to well.
A couple weeks later it was New Years and Alex was going to have his best friend Laurie sleep over and they where going to watch the ball drop on tv. Alex’s mom wasn’t going to be home that night. Alex’s mom went on a date with Alex’s dad! His mom was going to explain everything in the morning. That morning when Laurie went home, Laurie figured out her mom was pregnant and got all emotional. Laurie didn’t want her mom to have another baby.
Alex and Sol started to become very fond of each other. Alex brought his guitar to the home and played for Sol. Alex played jazz because Sol really like jazz. Alex had an idea. He was going to put on a winter concert at the home for all residents and all friends to come and watch Alex play jazz and Steven and Anette (the CHA-kings). Steven and Anette are a couple and they go to Alex’s school. They are really good at playing instuments so Alex let them come and play.
The concert turned out great and at half time Alex went and talked to Sol who couldn’t see very well so Alex went to Sol’s room and looked for Sol’s other glasses but couldn’t find them. All he fond was a key. Alex ran back to the concert and saw someone on the stage playing jazz and it wasn’t Steve and Anette. It was Sol.
Alex had an idea about another concert, a spring concert. At the spring concert Judge Trent comes and Sol is going to play. Only one problem. 2 people, 1 guitar. Sol brings out the key and shows it to Alex. The key is for Sol’s locker, inside it is an origanal Jazz guitar that Sol has given to Alex. So they play at the concert at everything goes great. At the end Sol gets all teary eyed because Sol wants to see his daughter and then out of no where... “Dad?”
Later on in the book it was becoming Valentine’s Day. There was going to be a dance at Alex’ school and Alex wants to take Laurie and Laurie wants to take Alex. But they end up taking someone else. In the middle of the dance they switch out couples and Alex gets to be with Laurie. Then Alex gets a call about Sol.

ReplyDeleteThe book Notes From the Midnight Driver was about this boy named Alex and he ran over a garden gnome. Alex got into trouble with the police and had to do some community service (100 hours). Alex has this friend Laurie, and Laurie gets really mad at him and calls him a dork-wit. So Alex meets Soloman Lewis and at first they don’t like each other but through out the book they start to like each other more (just like Alex and Laurie). Alex and Laurie spent New Years Eve together and they went to a dance with different people and Alex went to the hospital Soloman where was, and he wasn’t feeling well so Alex and Laurie just went back to his place, after almost kissing on the elevator.
I like the book but it was kind of a disappointment because I wanted Alex and Laurie to get together at least, but no!!! Gezz thats kind of a miss-led

ReplyDeleteI read Notes From The Midnight Driver and I enjoyed this book. The author of this book is Jordan Sonnenblick. It is about a boy named Alex. The other important characters are Mr. Solomon ( Alex calls him Mr. Sol or Sol ) and Laurie. Laurie is friends with Alex. Alex drinks his dad’s beer and takes his mom’s car keys. He was planning on driving to his dad’s house, but that was a bad idea. He did not have a driver’s license or a learner's permit and he was drunk. After 5 minutes or so he blacks out. The next time he wakes up he was in a person’s front yard and he got himself out. A cop was ready to arrest Alex as he walks to the police car he thought he saw a ripped off leg. The cop looks at it and he says it was just a lawn gnome. He went to the judge and his name was Trent. Judge Trent’s punishment was to go to a nursing home and Alex works with a guy named Mr. Lewis Solomon, who is a mean person. Alex start to like going to Mr. Solomon. One day he brings his guitar and he use to play it until he found out that he was drunk driving. Mr. Solomon was his punisment and he was just mad because of a back story I will tell you later.... He gets really mad at Alex saying that drunk driving was no big deal and the only reason was his wife is dead now because her daughter had the flu 100ºF. His wife told him to pick her up from the hospital but he was very famous at the guitar and never missed a show. So he left his wife and not pick him his own daughter because he cared more about his guitar then his only daughter. But now she is a very good lawyer but on the highway a truck driver was drunk and crashed in to her and killed her and you can read the book to see if Alex and Solomon get along. I think that this book is a good book for people who like comedy and how people get along and a little mystery. I thought that the plot was not really normal, it was such a thing you need to think of and think if they are going to get along. I think that it was a good book because I read it and its like learning how an old man and a young character get along with and that they are not so different after all. So I recommend this book to people who like comedy and seeing how people that are different get along. I think that I pick this because I thought that about a boy who gets drunk I had lots of questions and thought that it was a good book for me.

Alex's parents are divorced and Alex is acting up while his mom is out on a date he try's to attempt to go storm his fathers house for leaving his mom for his third grade teacher, but alex is only a kid he doesn't have a drivers license so he got the reach of his dads old vodka and steals his mothers car which leads to a catastrophe and of course there’s gonna be some consequences he visits an old grumpy man with a “colorful” vocabulary and this mans name is sol. Sol is very challenging to Alex. Alex and Sol are getting close and actually getting along and sol actually is enjoying Alex. sol finally realizes that Alex is not volunteering he’s was sentenced and Sol flips out because Sol lost his wife in a car accident.
ReplyDeleteMy Opinion is that this is a very good book its kind of funny and once you read it you wont put the book down thats how interesting this book is! My favorite part is when Alex got scared because he thought he killed a person and started crying. I liked that part because it was funny to me.

The book that I read was Notes From The Midnight Driver by Jordan Sonnenblick. In this book There’s a kid named Alex and Alex decides to get drunk and then drive his mom’s car to his dad’s house. So thats exactly what he does but instead of driving to his dad’s he ends up driving on to his neighbors lawn. He didn’t hurt anybody but he hurt something and that something was a lawn gnome. So Alex has to do some kind of community service so he can not get in big trouble (go to jail). He ends up having to work at nursing home with a guy named Solomon Lewis ( a patient at the nursing home). And at first they both didn’t really like each other at all. But eventuly they get along. They both go through a lot of diffrent events in the book and something happens at the end that may surprise you.
ReplyDeleteMy opinion of the book is that it is (was) a good book and I would probably reccomend it to someone who likes stories about Friendship, and funny stuff. My favorite part of the book was when Alex and Sol set up a concert for the nursing home, so the patients at the nursing home could see Alex play guitar and maybe enjoy it as much as Sol did. I would also reccomend it to someone to read it if they would have to choose a Maud Heart Lovelace book because it’s a really good book.

This book is sad,funny,and educational,I enjoyed it, it was so funny because Alex the boy he had to help and take care of a elderly man named Solomon Lewis, and Solomon and Alex became friends because Solomon thought they were kind of alike in a way. I also liked the book because it was filled with drama like when Sol found out that he was Alex’s punishment for drunk driving but he found out right after Alex decided to stay helping at the nursing home but right before Alex was about to tell him,but then things turned out ok until Sol past away but Alex was taking it well,he kept on with his life and he kept playing the gutiar and he kept writing Judge Trent but he never knew that the drunk driving could ever be the best thing in his life.

Notes from a midnight driver was really good. The story is about a boy named Alex and his parents got divorced and one night his mom went on a date. He is alone and then he gets drunk and when he is drunk he deciced to go to his dad’s house and tell him why he left his mom. But since he was all drunk on his way he crashed into a lawn gnome. The police comes and then he has to take care of a man called Soloman at a nursering home. First they dont like each other but then they realize that they have lots in common. Then after a while they realize that they have so much in common that they learn life lesson’s from each other. If you want to find out the rest then read the book to see what happens on the end!!!!
ReplyDeleteI really liked this book because then you could see how an old man and a teen get along so well that then there ist anymore difference. A lot of teen’s think old people are like sooo boring but in this book it has tought me that not all of them are really boring and that there past has somtimes changed them a lot.

I would recommend this because it will teach you a life lesson, and its funny. :D
This book was about a boy named Alex he decide that he wanted to get back at his parents because they are separated. He wants to get even so he takes his dads beers and want to dive but he is drunk don’t have a driver’s license or learner's permit so really he could not get in the car with out in adult. Alex blacked out in about 4 min. He woke up in somebody yard he got him self out. The police were there he walk over to them he thought something was yanking his leg off but really it was a lawn gnome. But when he got to court the judge said 100 hours and with someone named. Mr. Lewis Solomon he was old and was rude and mean. The next day the nurse shows alex to Mr. Lewis Solomon. Even the nurse said good luck and over the days alex start to like hem in till one day alex brought his guitar there and said why he was there and Mr. Lewis Solomon Did not like that he said no big deal he did not that because he his wife died in a car crash because one day his wife told him to go pick up his daughter at the hospital because she had 100F. He did not because he cared more about his guitar and his concert and so her mom went to go get her and a drunk truck diver crashed into her and she died. But her daughter is good now because she has a good job. But the there was a twist read the book to find out what it was or were is she.
ReplyDeleteI like this book because it was funny like who Mr. Lewis Solomon was really funny and he made me just smile when I was reading it and this stuff really happens to people in real life and it is good to read about it to no who it was and what the cause and effect was to the whole story and what would end up at the end that is why I liked it.

Its about a boy named Alex gregory and he decides to get drunk and drive his mom’s car and go to his dad’s house to yell at him because his mom and dad are divorce. Then he crashes the car into a tree and he ran over a lawn gnome. Then he gets arrested and goes to court and gets sentenced 100 hours community service at a nursing home. His mom assigns him to a man named Solomon lewis but Alex calls him sol. At first Sol was mean to Alex but then later in the book Alex starts to play music for Sol and then Sol starts to be nice to him. Then its winter break and his dad tells him that he is getting a job in Philadelphia. Then Alex was at a nursing home party and Sol got mad at him and told Alex to leave and Alex did. Then Laurie slept over his house and then while they were asleep Alex’s mom and dad came in the house and went to bed. The next day Alex talked to his parents about getting back together. Then Alex and his friends had a concert for Sol and during the concert Sol told Alex to get his glasses and Alex went to the room and he couldn’t find it but he found a key and when he got back he saw Sol playing his guitar and he was surprised because Sol never told him that he played guitar at all. Then later in the book they have another concert and Sol got to play and after a song the judge came on stage and she called Sol dad. Then at the end Sol dies of sickness.
ReplyDeleteThis book was good because it had a interesting and funny story to it and the characters are funny. I have never read a book like notes from the midnight driver before and I thought it was good. There were parts that I didn’t expect to happen like judge judy was Sol’s daughter and that surprised me and when Alex wanted to get more hours of community service. But this book was good and I recommend it to people who like books that are funny.
My book is Notes from the midnight driver by Jordan Sonnenblick and I finished the book it started by the kid Alex got drunk and he took his moms car and crashed it into a lawn gnome. The police came and they took him to the hospital to get heeled up and when he woke up he saw his parents together witch was weird cause they were divorced. When he was better he went to court and they did not sentence him to jail but they sentenced him to 100 hours at a community home. So he did that and his mom chose a guy for Alex to help take care of and his name was Solomon Lewis and he was a grumpy guy so Alex didn't like this guy and they hated each other but they created a bond and sol likes Alex. Alex decided to put on a concert for the elderly home with two kids from his school named Steven and Annette they were called the cha-KINGS and they put on a concert and Sol asked Alex to get his glasses for him during the break so Alex went to get them but they weren't there so he went back down and saw Sol playing his guitar finishing a concert and Alex was mad so later Alex went to see Solomon again and brought his guitar cause they were going to put on another concert but this time it was going to be Alex Sol and the cha-KINGS and Alex was thinking he would buy an old nasty guitar but Sol told him to go to his storage closet and get the case out of it and Alex does and it was an old guitar and he said Alex can have it and he gave his guitar to sol and they practiced and the concert went well and everything was perfect and Alex and his friend Laurie were at lunch and prom was coming and a girl names Sarah from band that Alex knew and Sarah asked him to go to prom with her and Alex said yes but Laurie wanted to go with him so total drama for boys right uhhhh. But the night of prom alex got a call and the person said that Sol was in the hospital and Alex and his mom went to pick up Sarah and they went over to the nursing home and waited for Sol to come in when he did and Alex felt bad because Sol’s skin was blue and Alex was curious what they did to him. So when Alex and Sarah went back to prom they saw Laurie dancing and Alex told her what had happened to Sol and Laurie wanted to go see her and they went again and Sol and Laurie were talking to her and what happens next is ................................. ?????????? I cant tell you read it for yourself but i thought the book was good because jordan sonnenblick adds a lot of detail in his books. I would recommend this book to people that like really just like reading in the first place this was wyatt and im out!!!!!!!!!!!

The book Notes from the midnight driver is a boy named Alex. He was in his mothers car while he was drunk and crashed into a gnome. So the judge said he had to do community service and he went to do his community service with an eldery man named Solomon Lewis. So Alex and his best friend named Laurie go and do community service with Solomon Lewis (Laurie only goes if Alex asks her to). I would tell the end but that would ruin the book and the blog so if you want to know what happens while Alex is with Solomon Lewis? Then read this book Notes from the midnight driver by Jordan Sonnenblick.

My book was NOTES FROM THE MIDNIGHT DRIVER. It was a good book because I liked how they had Alex do community service because of what he did. Alex had to do community service for 100 hours because he was driving drunk.
ReplyDeleteIn the begging Alex got caught driving drunk. He ran over a lawn gnome that was a really precious thing to their neibore. He looked at the ground and thought that he had hit a person but it was the gnome. When he was at the jail he was tested so the cop told him to raise his right hand but he did not no which one was which. His eye was bloody from the crash so he could barley see out of it.
In the middle he met this guy Sol that he had to do community service for. Sol was old and mean at first then he was nice to Alex once he knew who he was. After a while I noticed that they had a lot in common such as they both like music. Alex and his band played a concert at the hospital.
In the end Sol dies because of nemonia. He played one more concert before he had past away. He had played the exact same song as Alexs band had played the first time.
I think that 4th and 5th graders because I think that the book is at their level.
I think that they should have made it about someone who tried to commit suicied.
The book I read was Notes from the midnight driver by Jordan Sonnenblick. It was about Alex, a guy in high school, that plays the guitar. Alex was mad at his dad who he thought walked out on his mom. So he took his mom’s car when his mom was on a date and then took some drinks of vodka. Then he drove to his Dad’s house so he could argue with him. But got drunk and crashed into someone lawn gnome. For that he got arrested and had to do community service at the nursing home to a guy named Sol. Sol is a grumpy guy who makes fun of others. Sol is Yiddish so not a lot of people can understand him. While he’s with Sol Alex grows fond of him and realizes that he actually a sad guy who just wants company. So he makes it up by being mean. As he goes there he brings his friend Laurie which was a bad mistake because Sol thinks that Alex should date her. Instead of listening to him he plans a concert for the people at the home, including the CHA-king who are two kids from his high school that play some instruments really well. While at the concert Alex some problems like finding Laurie attractive, his parents dating again, and learning that Sol plays the guitar well unlike himself. The next time he comes over to the home Sol asked him if he wanted to get guitar lessons from him and Alex said yes. In the process of doing this he still has a problem with Laurie and his parents. So on one of his visits to Laurie he sorts out the problem with Laurie and her mom, which helped him sort out the problem with him and his parents. After that things just start to fall into place and Alex decided to throw another concert and this time with Sol. At the concert Sol gets a surprise that he will never forget, but you’ll have to read to find out what happens next.

Okay so this kid named Alex is a little tipsy. So once he is smashed he grabs his moms car keys and takes the car to drive to his dads house. But instead he went to the lawn gnomes house. Then alex got to go to a special place called court. His mom was there everybody was there. Then the judge sentenced him to 100 hours to a nursing home. He was assigned to this guy named Solomon Lewis. Solomon Lewis is this guy who is at a nursing home and usually has a lot of guests. Also he doesn’t like people who are nice to him. Another fact he is yiddish which is jewish. And once in awhile he writes notes to the judge. The first time alex was there sol was just sitting there staring at the Tv. So alex was there for about 30 minutes. When alex went to school the next day his friend named Laurie Yelled at him alex peter gregory are you a moron said Laurie.
