Twelve-year-old Catherine just wants a normal life. Which is near impossible when you have a brother with autism and a family that revolves around his disability. She's spent years trying to teach David the rules from "a peach is not a funny-looking apple" to "keep your pants on in public"---in order to head off David's embarrassing behaviors.
But the summer Catherine meets Jason, a surprising, new sort-of friend, and Kristi, the next-door friend she's always wished for, it's her own shocking behavior that turns everything upside down and forces her to ask: What is normal?

I read the book Rules by Cynthia Lord. This book is about a 12 year old girl named Catherine. She has a brother that has autism and his name is David. Durning the summer at one of David’s OT, Catherine meets a boy named Jason. He isn’t able to speak so he has a book with cards that has words on them for him to learn. She also has another thing going on. She has a new neighbor named Melissa and Catherine is scared to talk to Melissa because of Catherine’s brother David who will probably embarrass her. Also because she doesn’t know if Melissa likes the things she likes to do. But she has a problem. Catherine is afraid to go out in public with Jason without getting made fun of. But one night there’s this dance at the community center and Catherine asks Jason to go with her but Jason became mad at her. So she has to see if Jason will show up to the dance.

ReplyDeleteThis book is about this girl named Kathleen. She is a older sister and she has a brother. And her brother love rules because he has something wrong with hem. He nows some stuff because of the rules but not a lot of stuff. When ever she is around her brother to mess up then she will get in trouble.
So the new person moves in next door that Kathleen really likes but there is a big thing with that he is just like her brother and she is thinking what if people make her feel bad because she hangs out with hem. Like people will say ha ha or something. So she has to think over and over again to see if she wants to be with hem.
I thought this book has no action but it keeps you going to get you hook on the book so just when you think you like it it brings something new in that is why I liked it and I think that is because I really just read action. But i wanted to try something new. I really like the book because I know how she feel in some ways because I have a brother and if I mess up then he will maybe and then in the book she has the same thing. And she does not like to spend a lot of time with her father and brother I some times don’t like to because it is all boys and I just don’t want to some time.

First Catharine made rules for David so he can learn new things he can’t and can’t do. David has Autism so he is disabled. Ryan is a jerk. He lies to David and gives him a candy wrappers and says it’s candy. I did indeed love this book but in the beginning I thought it was boring because all David wanted to do was go to the video store. I thought that was really boring but this book was a pretty good story to read. If you like to make rules and If you think ups and downs are crazy then this book is for you.

Catherine always has to make rules for her brother like don't pull your pants off in public. That way she doesn't get embarressed. One day when she goes to OT with her brother she meets a boy named Jason. Jason can't talk so he uses a book full of cards with words he can use to "speak". Catherine also meets her new neighbor. She's afraid to talk to her because she does not want to be embaressed. Then when she askes Jason to go to this dance because her new nieghbor invited her to come with someone. He gets mad at first, and you have to find out next to see if he will go.

Then their is this girl named Melissa and she’s too scrared to approch her because she thinks she wouldent like her because of her brother. But then one night there is a dance and she wants to take Jason to the dance but Jason is mad at her so she just has to wait and see if he showes up!

David has Autism so he has to go to what his mom calls the clinic. Catherine makes rules for david sense he can’t understand everyday things stuff we just do without thinking, like knocking on the bathroom door or saying thank you when someone gives you a present. Catherine is trying to help david, But a girl moves in next door. She is what you might call “popular” she can do anything and others with agree she can wear anything she wants without looking bad, well you get the point, she laughs at david sometimes when he does things so they don’t really get along and she is going out with the biggest jerk in school. This book is filled with stress, realism, and problems so find out what happens at the end by reading it.

She has millions of Rules for him like one of the most popular one is “NO TOYS IN THE FISH TANK!” Then this girl moves in and Cathreine is worried that her brother will do something embarrassing. Then when she goes to her brother’s OT she meets this boy named Jason that can talk and that is in a wheel chair. She starts making words for him and then there is one dance where the new girl tells cathreine to go to the dance but she cant because she has to go to the Jasons birthday party and then they get in a fight. What will happen next? Read and find out on your own.

ReplyDeleteRules is about a girl named Catherine, she is a very artistic person and a rule person. The reason WHY she is such a rule person is because of her little brother David. David looks normal but sadly he has autism, and with autism there are rules like: No toys in the fish tank and Don’t open other people’s doors at their house and so many more! Well when Cath, mom and David go to OT at the clinic Cath meets a boy named Jason, nice hair, beautiful blue eyes and a wheelchair, wait what!? A wheelchair? Yeah you heard me( or read me...), and he can’t walk or talk, but he has this word book he uses and it’s got little words and phrases like: Sinks a big one!!! And Catherine! Awww, how cute! But to make things worse, she has a new neighbor named Kristi, and she’s nice and all but not really what Cath was looking for, she is looking for some one that will go swimming in the pond with her and do morse code through a window. But when Kristi asks Cath if she would want to go to the dance, Cath first says no but when Jason admits that he likes her, she is now kind of liking him back things get a little weird! But eventually things go back to normal and Cath asks Jason to go to the dance, he eventually says yes and they all live happily ever after!
I liked it a lot! 5 stars*****!

In the book Rules by Cynthia Lord there is a story about a girl named Catherine and her “Rules” for her little brother David. But David isn’t exactly as normal as a little kid would be, he has autisim. All Catherine wants is a normal life and she doesn’t think that she can have a normal life when her little brother is around.Because of David’s Autisim He goes to a class called OT and this class is ment to help David about his autisim. Catherine soon meets a boy named Jason, Jason cant talk and is in a wheel chair and has to use a book to tap words. Her and Jason soon start to talk a lot because Jason also goes to OT because of his disability and Catherine goes with David and her mom. But soon there is a new neighboor thats moves next door and her name is Kristi. Kristi and Catherine are both the same age and soon they beccome good friends. There is also this boy that is kind of the mean one and his name is Ryan, one time Ryan had gum and David wanted a peice and Ryan said he had to jump to get a peice, David jumps and Ryan gives David the gum but the problem was that it was an empty gum wrapper. There is also a dance that Kirsti and Ryan are going to (together) and Kirsti thinks it would be a good idea if Catherine asked Jason but soon Catherine says the wrong thing to Jason and Jason gets a little mad at Catherine. Will Catherine go to the dance? Will Jason go to the dance? Will Jason not be as mad as Catherine thinks he is? Will Catherine break her rule about not being able to dance if the lights are on? ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed this book, I liked this book out of all the other ones.This book had a positive but negative ending, but when one door closes, another one opens. I would tell this book to anyone,any boy,any girl,any adult. THIS BOOK IS REALLY REALLY REALLY GREAT.

ReplyDeleteIt starts out how this girl Catherine has a brother that has autism. She always has to take care of her brother David she has no friends that is her age on the block. Then when her neighbor moved out this girl moved in and Catherine was so happy she wanted to go over there but she was always to scared to go say “hi” because of her brother. Catherine has a Notebook that she writes in and puts words in there to help her brother under stand what to do and what not to do and David has a RULES book were he puts his words in and Catherine and her mom always takes David to go see his therapy that helps him.
Catherine’s friend Jason has a book filled with words that help him speak and mostly every day she makes a new card for him and shares it to him then she puts it in the book for when Jason has to look at it again. Catherine struggles with David because their dad is always late getting home and when there dad gets home David always want to go to the game store. Catherine is always on the run with David Catherine has no time to hang out with her friends and when she has time she is always scared to call up one of her friends and tell her she can come over because david might act up.
Then one day there mom said why don’t you go over next door and ask them if they want to come over and have dinner so Catherine went next door but they neighbors daughter was not home but the mom was and she ask her if she would want to come over and have dinner with us but she said no thank you.
Then Catherine went home to tell her mom that they can’t come over and have dinner. Then the next day the next door neighbor girl came over and Catherine and her went up to her room and talked and played with her two Guinea pigs Cinnamon and Nutmeg then her brother opened up her door then he ran down the hallway, then Catherine went down stairs and said keep care of David then the next door neighbor said it probably is a bad time so she left and Catherine was so mad and went and yelled a her brother.
Then in a couple of weeks her friend Jason was having a party and she was invited and when David heard about it he wanted to come to get a piece of cake. So when the time came for the party Catherine walked over there and walked in there was a lot of people then when David came with his there mom David ran and got a piece of cake and sat down then Catherine and Jason were talking then something went bad, Jason thought the reason that she didn’t want to go to the dance with him is because she’s embarrassed when she really isn’t and Catherine grabbed David and ran out the door and said were going then when they got home.
She felt sad for what she did to Jason at the birthday party and did so she called him up and said do you want to go to the dance with me tonight. Then Catherine called up her dad and said you need to get home fast and on your way go to the mall and pick up a toy for David and then when there dad got home she got in the car and said take me to the dance.
So They went to the dance she said to her dad can you wait until Jason gets her so they waited until Jason got to the party then she grabbed him and she started talking to him and saying sorry for what she did and then after she said do you want to Dance.
This was my most favorite book I read because it was sad and fun to read. I liked this book because it was a good book and interesting to read and sad at the same time I would recommend this book to people because It is a really great book to read and you get to see how others life is and how people act. My favorite part of the book is when jason and her make up and my least favorite part is when Ryan gives David gum but there is nothing in it.
